Perfect presence: What does this mean for the design of virtual learning environments?

One of the advantages of building a virtual reality system is that it allows students to enter new worlds which in these instances include trips to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, a field visit to an Oak Wood and a close encounter in a 3D maze. In all these environments the factors affecting a sense of being there or presence was investigated. Enhanced audio feedback increased a subjective sense of presence but did not increase students' conceptual learning scores. We have also found that a sense of social presence enhanced the notion of being there together with measures of collaboration. However being there can take its toll on students and our findings suggest it imposes a cognitive overload. Where students have a choice, they try and reduce this overload by asking for conceptual tools to assist them in their learning tasks. The studies reported in this paper provide some benchmark data about these issues which deserve further investigation if we are to design effective virtual environments for conceptual learning.  相似文献

The global physical inactivity pandemic: an analysis of knowledge production

In July 2012, The Lancet announced a pandemic of physical inactivity and a global call to action to effect change. The worldwide pandemic is said to be claiming millions of lives every year. Asserting that physical inactivity is pandemic is an important moment. Given the purported scale and significance of physical inactivity around the world, this research examines how the pandemic is rhetorically constructed and how various solutions are proposed. We apply a governmentality perspective to examine the continuity, coherence and appropriateness of ideas about physical activity. The analysis demonstrates that within The Lancet, there is disunity about what is known about physical activity, problematic claims of ‘abnormality’ and contradictions in the proposed deployment of a systems approach to solve the problem. The article concludes by suggesting that as knowledge produced about physical activity grows, scholars need to beware of nostalgic conceptions of physical activity, account for the immense diversity of lived experiences which do not abide by idealistic recommendations and consider more rigorously contentious claims about physical activity programme effects.  相似文献

Congressional Research Service (CRS) products, such as CRS Reports and Issue Briefs, are valuable reference tools that can assist reference professionals in providing service to a wide range of patrons and should not be overlooked. This article briefly explains how legislative reference bureaus came into existence and details the early legislative history of the formation of CRS, the federal legislative reference service. This article also explains what products CRS creates and for what purpose. 近十年来,东、中、西部和东北地区的经济社会发展差异带来了文化发展大环境的改变,也带来了图书馆行业绩效水平的变化。观察和分析发现,一方面,全国县级公共图书馆整体上滑入“L型”绩效模式;另一方面,不同区域的县级图书馆的绩效水平呈现出明显差异。基于东、中、西部和东北地区不同的经济社会发展环境,由财政补贴、从业人员、人口基数和GDP等变量所构成的不同组合方式,会导致不同的公共资源绩效水平。计划体制下形成的格式化管理模式出现了不同程度的失效,数十年来一直行之有效的“通过增加公共投入带动业务增长”,即“增人加钱”式的传统管理模式正逐渐失去效率。深化文化领域供给侧结构改革而不是机制性创新或者技术性改良,已成为优化行业管理、提升单位绩效的根本性政策路径。图5。表6。参考文献25。  相似文献
